How to Become Unstoppable
“There’s a significant difference between what you want to achieve (goals) and who you want to become (your identity). A goal is vulnerable to the endless changes in life. An identity is permanent and can weather any storm.” - Adam Bornstein from his book You Can't Screw This Up
And here is a real-world example: I had a client the other day - a woman in her 50s that works out with me twice a week - text me in the morning and say,
"Hi Heide - I forgot to grab my gym clothes on my way out the door. Ugh. There's no way to grab them on my way so I will be in work clothes and shoes today."
I cannot tell you how happy this text made me! "Why," you ask?
Because this is a perfect example of true behavior change. Of a new identity.
Most clients would have texted the first two sentences and then finished with, "There's no way to grab them on my way so unfortunately I'll need to reschedule our workout."
See the difference?
This is a woman with no fitness background whatsoever. I was able to bring her a pair of sneakers, thankfully. But she showed up in her nice sandals, jeans, and blouse ready to work.
See, when you truly incorporate something into your life - when you become that person - very little gets in the way of you doing what it is you do. And there is no denying it: creating a new way of living requires creating a new you - a new identity. Experiencing something different in your life requires doing something different which requires that you become the type of person who does that thing. Make sense?
That’s why I believe in always starting with mindset. You will not see lasting change in your life if you do not change. But change is hard. We have spent our entire lives building up stories that get in our way - reasons we tell ourselves for why we are not successful or can't be successful in something we want to achieve. Undoing that takes a lot of work.
But it's possible.
And it's worth it.
Leading a healthy life has the power to impact every area of your life in positive way. Are you ready to see that change for yourself? Are you ready to truly become the person who leads the life you want to lead?
